Big Belly Burger.

Hello!

So it's been quite a while since my last post. It didn't quite work out with Aurora unfortunately which is quite sad. I've been doing bits and bobs for the last few months. I was planning on rebranding my Hive Clothing brand but when I was thinking about it I realised I just wanted to do a fifties inspired retro type thing instead. so Hive is no more too. My girlfriend Kate and I decided to join together and create a new brand called Raygun.

Raygun will be more than just t-shirts. It will have accessories, homeware and stationary too. All the designs will be somewhat retro inspired because as you can see by the design of my blog, its kinda what we're in to.

So there's not much on the site now but I thought I'd post this thing I've been working on today. If you're a fan of the flash or arrow then you'll get the reference.

Here's the 50s McDonalds ad this is based on...

Aurora Productions

I'm branching out!

Me and a few friends are joining together to form a small production company. I will continue to work on small projects under the Shoebox87 name but our little company will be focused on bigger projects and clients. I've decided to design the logo and branding for the company. Here is my initial concept.

Solita Pale Ale logo.

Not posted anything on here for a while. I did this logo today and entered it in a competition. I'm quite happy with it. I'd been looking at retro style label vectors and saw a couple tutorials. Saw this as a good opportunity to put what I'd learned into practice. Not much thought has gone into this logo. I came up with the basic design based on the retro labels I'd seen on google and then I played with the colours and fonts. I used the Italian flag colours because Solita is an abbreviation of south of little Italy. Then I used the blue because it's associated with Italy (the football and rugby teams wear blue). The baige tone is supposed to represent the pale ale. Let's see if it wins?...

Old sketch

Found this old sketch that I always really liked and messed around with it in photoshop. I think I like it?

Supergirl

My girlfriend is very talented when it comes to drawing and she decided to draw this picture of super girl the other day. We were talking about comic artwork and how photoshop is sometimes used for colouring. She asked me if I'd colour it and I said yes. I'm quite happy with it. here's how it looked in its various stages.

Copyright is poop.

I really want to make this t-shirt a reality but unfortunately I was too lazy to draw the character Ronald Ray-Gun completely off the top of my head. I instead copied a picture from a book on how to draw retro cartoons. This book! I basically drew the body that was in the book and then made my own head up and added a ray gun. So now I've gotta try and make a body for this dude from scratch. It shouldn't be too hard but I just really like this one already!

I was thinking of continuing this theme and coming up with other retro cartoons based on famous people. So far i've got George Rush which is just George Bush if he was like The Flash and the other is Burnt Bacharach which would be Burt Bacharach mixed with Twoface.

boredom

how come I can do this out of boredom but do nothing when I need to do work?

If you're impressed by this, don't be. I basically copied the character from a book called cartoon cool. Only the head and the gun are my own. Oh, and the Names Ronald Ray-Gun and George Rush. I came up with those. I wish I could draw characters like this from scratch.

Well...

I went off and did an illustration like I said. It's not the most interesting or original thing in the world but it's not bad. I just wanted to prove to myself I was still able to use illustrator because it'd been so long. I'm very happy with how those tares on her shorts look because that was a bit of an experiment. The pockets look flat and lame but I don't care.

photoshop politics

Don't know where this came from. Just had an idea one day then I just spent ages on it. On and off for about a month or so. Think its finished now. I originally wanted to make it for a t-shirt but what with all the ladies in bondage I doubt it'd be allowed on the site (mysoti) where I upload my designs. But anyway. At least you get to see it. You meaning nobody because nobody looks at this blog ever.

new t-shirt

Sweet Tooth (yum) tee by Shoebox87. Available from MySoti.com.

my lovely girlfriend asked me to make a t-shirt design similar to a tattoo belonging to the sexy Pixie Acia. I drew this tiny doodle at work and i liked it so much it ended up being my final design. I added some colour and touched it up a bit but still... tis the same.

Go and check out the lovely work of Theresa Reilly-Cooper.
Some of the best illustration I've seen in a long while.
Check this Lady too while you're at it. I've seen her riding around on her bike. No helmet. Tisk tisk.

Lisence to ill... ustrate

I've started doing illustrations in this style and i have no idea where it came from. thought it'd be cool to do one for each review I write. Hence the youth in revolt one below.
This whole style started when i was designing some posters for one of my brothers short films called "Glass Onions" and i quite like it.
